Building the table properly
- List your household's actual spending over the last three months at home
- Find the local equivalent price for each line, using real local listing and supermarket sites
- Add heating, and add a car if the area needs one
- Add a first-year contingency
Step four is not excess caution. The first year carries one-off costs — furniture, deposits, document work — and inexperience costs — buying the wrong thing, using the expensive provider because you do not yet know the cheaper one.
